The things that influence us
This week in class we read two articles, one about human nurture and two about agents of socialization. The first article talked about how humans need nurture to properly develop. The article talked about feral and isolated children. It said how if children are left isolated from people by themselves, isolated children, they do not properly develop. These children don't know language and without language they cant form ideas, thoughts, and etc. While feral children are children who are for some reason separated from there parents and are raised by animals such as dogs. These children will take on the characteristics of the animals they are raised by. The articles point was that if babies/ children don't get proper human nurture there brain will not properly develop and they won't know how to function as a regular human. The second article we read was about agents of socialization and this was about the how the people and things around us influence our self-concept, emotions, attitudes and behavior. People and things such as family, neighborhood, religion, daycare, school, peers, sports, and etc influence who we are.

Yes, if children are not taught nurture traits such as language then they cannot from ideas, and without forming ideas their development is stunted and their process of socialization is stopped.

ReplyDeleteCareful how you coment. I think on Pat's blog you said something about how it is good for parents being able to hit kids, but that was not the point Pat was making. He was saying that because his parents are working class, they used physical punishment. The point was not necessarily whether it was "good" or "bad" the point was that you are shaped by the class you grow up in and by how your family treats you. However, knowing what you know about nurture, based on what you said above, I am surprised that you would think that physical punishment would be a positive part of one's socialization.
Also, please try to be academic on the blog. Avoid using things like "bro" etc. - okay?
P.S. I forgot - also be sure to relate these posts to your own life's experiences.
